|Tucked away up a tiny, grassy lane in Gunnerside, High Hillways has been superbly renovated to provide a stunning hideaway retreat from the cares of the world. Beautifully decorated, with every modern convenience you could wish for, High Hillways nevertheless retains the old-fashioned charm and atmosphere of a typical dales leadminer's cottage. Visited frequently by its owners for weekends and holidays, High Hillways is an ideal place from which to tour nearby beauty spots, ramble over the hills, or just relax and enjoy the timeless peace of beautiful Swaledale.
Sorry, no smoking or pets. Sleeps 5. Free wifi!
High Hillways weekly bookings run from Saturday to Saturday (reserve online or give us a call to book). Please note, High Hillways is for sale, so we can only take bookings up to 3 months in advance.
Short breaks are available (see FAQs) - please ring 01748 886366 to book a short break.
Many gentle or more challenging circular walks start from the charming little village of Gunnerside, which was first settled by the Vikings, followed by the lead miners. There is a friendly tearoom / bistro, Ghyllfoot, (bistro open Wed and Sat, booking required, curry takeaway alternate Mondays) serving excellent food. Nearest pubs are the Farmer's Arms, Muker, 2 miles, and gastropub, the Punch Bowl, 2 miles. Local attractions include lead mine ruins up Gunnerside Ghyll, craft shops at Muker and Hazel Brow Organic Farm at Low Row (great fun for the children). Local shops, post office, market, pubs, Swaledale Outdoors for hiking equipment and recycling facilities at Reeth, 6 miles. Bike hire at Fremington, 7 miles. Wide range of restaurants, tearooms and pubs throughout the dale. Orange (only) mobile (patchy) reception. Hazel Brow Organic Farm can provide a welcome hamper for your arrival (Low Row) and Ghyllfoot Tearoom frozen "bistro-style" meals - see FAQs.
